Meet Meri - the founder of Vento Clothing, a one-woman clothing brand.
" I am a creative person and at school I always struggled with the question "What will you be when you grow up?". I felt like the only options offered at school were pretty much a doctor, a teacher or a lawyer. I value those professions immensely but it was distressing when nothing felt like my own. That's why I didn't apply to study anywhere directly after high school. In retrospect, there really is no rush to decide your future in your early twenties, I wish I could tell little-Meri that!
I felt this frustration of not being able to fulfill my creativity in previous jobs I worked at. Moving to a new city three years ago and facing reality made me think about what I really wanted to do.
Through a friend of mine, I stumbled across a person, who was ready to help me with starting a clothing brand. That was a kickstart for this process. It was time to put my dreams into action.
Having previously worked in the fast-fashion industry, I understood how manufacturing trendy garments was all about profit. It confirmed my idea of wanting to bring a high-quality, responsibly and ethically produced alternative to the market.
Wanting to create garments that are timeless, I started doing the background work on how to build a clothing brand from scratch. It was clear to me from the very start that I wanted my garments to be produced in Finland.
The fashion industry is very competitive and information isn't easily shared. I'm super grateful for all the precious advice and help I've gotten so far from strangers and the people around me.
Because of this, I also want to give help and share my knowledge in the future. I want to help those who are in the same situation that I was in: a dream of having a clothing brand but without knowing how to make it happen. During the past year and a half, I have learned an insane amount of new things about the clothing industry, as well as about running my own company.
Starting a clothing brand from scratch hasn't been easy, but every setback teaches a lesson. You have to remember why you started, sometimes you lose sight of that when it gets tough.
Vento has been on the market for eight months now. The unstable world situation has brought its additional spice to the process but I'm really motivated for the future. I am currently working on Vento's second collection, which will hopefully be available soon.
It has been heartwarming to notice how Vento's garments have become a part of your birthdays, gatherings and even engagements. That's our goal - so enjoy and have fun creating new memories wearing Vento!
