10 TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR GARMENTS LAST
Share
Taking care of your clothes saves you money in the long run and protects the environment. Doing laundry properly is one of the best ways to make sure they last longer.
1. SORT YOUR LAUNDRY
By color: dark, light and white separately
Depending on the washing method and temperature
Depending on how dirty the garment is, wash super dirty clothes separately
2. ONLY WASH WHEN NECESSARY
It's worth stopping to think about your own laundry habits from time to time. When you wash less frequently, you also reduce the consumption of natural resources and extend the life of your clothes.
3. SPOT CLEAN
If there is a stain on the garment, treat it as quickly as possible. Stains come easily, but it is more difficult to remove them. The longer the stain is on the garment, the more difficult it is to remove, so act quickly.
4. AIR YOUR GARMENTS
Before washing, consider whether the garment can be aired instead of washed. If the garment smells musty, but there are no visible stains or other dirt, airing clothes is an excellent way of getting rid of odours without needing to wash them.
5. FOLLOW THE CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Follow the instructions on the care label. Wash in lower temperatures - it's not only better for the garment but also better for the environment.
6. WASH INSIDE OUT
Wash the garment inside out. Many washing machines rely on friction and agitation to remove soils and stains, which can make fabric pilling worse. Turning your clothes inside out protects the outside of your clothes from that agitation, helping to maintain its smooth appearance.
7. SKIP FABRIC SOFTENER
Although it softens and brings a fresh scent to the garment, fabric softener weakens the fabric and causes pilling. In addition, fabric softener damages certain materials such as Gore-Tex and elastane, and excessive dosage of fabric softener can make certain materials fuzzy.
8. AVOID TUMBLE DRYING
Most textiles and fabrics shrink when exposed to high heat, and tumble dryers use heat to remove moisture and dry your clothes.
9. HANG-DRY YOUR GARMENTS
Hang the garments to dry. It prevents wrinkling and is a better option than a tumble dryer or an iron in terms of the garment's durability. Hang the clothes to dry immediately after the washing program ends and turn the garments right side out. Shake and shape the garment when wet.
10. STORE YOUR GARMENTS PROPERLY
It might seem basic, but improper storage can cause a garment to lose its shape. Fold your tops, t-shirts and denim, but garments such as shirts should be stored on a hanger. Choose the right kind of hanger for your clothes so they keep their shape. For example, blazers and jackets need a large hanger to support the shoulders.
